I have corresponded in the past with an Emmett Lewis (now deceased) of TN (My, William Lapsley Lewis, Jr's, 1/2 first cousin 1 x removed) who was a descendant of Col. James Neville who married Mary Lewis. This man apparently had a double Lewis connection as his last name was Lewis & he descended from a Mary (Lewis) Neville.
I last corresponded with him in 1988.
He says in his first letter to me in 1984 that he descended from Col. James Neville and wife Mary Lewis of Amherst Co., VA. Their daughter was
Sally Neville who married Charles A. Lewis in 1796 in Amherst Co., VA.
He says that Charles A. Lewis was related to Mary, the mother of Sally.
Mary was the daughter of "Planter" John Lewis of Albemarle Co, VA.
Col. James Neville is mentioned on p. 18 of the 370-Yr-History, and is son
of James Nevil & his first wife--widow Keen; grandson of John Nevill who
married Elizabeth Bohannan.
Sally Neville & Charles A. Lewis had a son, Robert Neville (aka Nolan) Lewis, b. 1798, d. 1859 who was the ancestor of Emmett Lewis.
Emmett sent me pages out of a book called LEWISES, MERIWETHERS AND THEIR
KIN which listed a lot of this family.
There are also Bohannons who intermarried with these Lewises, also Meriwethers.
This Lewis family is related to the famous Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.

collinsrl Thanks for following up with me on this. In Merrow Egerton Sorley's book, "Lewis of
Warner Hall: The History of a Family ... ," there is a passage referencing Lilburn Lewis' sons &
daughters returning to Virginia following Lilburn's death in 1812. The passage is on page 364.

I'm curious to read the books you mentioned because I'm at a wall with my Lewis line. You may be
familiar with the "History and Families, Lake County, Tennessee" (p 122) which also mentions
Robert Nolan Lewis. It notes him as moving to Madrid Bend in 1840 and originally born in
Albermarie County, Virginia, 1798. The book goes on to state, though, his parents were Charles A.
Lewis and Sallie Neville, noting that they arrived first in Kentucky in 1822, " ... soon after the
purchase of land from the Chickasaw Indians," before the subsequent move to Tennessee in 1840.
Either Robert Nolan Lewis and Robert Neville Lewis are one in the same person, and there is confusion about his middle name if his mother was Sallie Neville. Could have just assumed that his middle name was “Neville”, OR there were two different Robert N Lewises born at the same time in Albermarle, VA, and died at the same time in Obion, TN.

Meriwether dated April 3, 1818 [Miss Ann M. Barker, Miss Caroline H. Barker, Mary A. Barker,
Daniel Barry, Charles N. Meriwether, Mary B. Overton].
Nephew Samett(?) Meriwether is delivering this note. Things are improving. The "cloruning and plastering" are helping their worn out lands.
The improved husbandry has increased the land values 100%. The Hessian fly is still a problem
but less so because of a new wheat - Lawles Wheat - from the North.
Mentions a new Agriculture Society that has been established "and the president of the united States (Monroe)and two of his predecessors (Jeferson and Madison?) are members."
"Our relation" Nicholas Lewis visited last fall and "Robert" is coming in Maybe June. Asks Charles to come to Virginia for a visit.
8. Letter from W. D. Meriwether to Doct. Charles Meriwether, 0 C M Kentucky datelined October
30, 1813.
Advises of the death of his son Nicholas on July 25 after an illness of 2 days. Capt.
Alcock [Ed Note: name is difficult to read here but there was a Capt Alcock that was said to have
married Elizabeth Walker, Dr. Walker's second wife] is moving to Tennessee to take up 100 acres
in Tennessee promised him by William's son Nicholas. Asks Charles to mark off 100A.
Richard Meriwether [Ed Note: probably Richard Terrell Meriwether son of Thomas Meriwether and Anne
Minor] is bringing $100 that William got from Dabney Minor to help pay taxes and expenses on the
land. Includes list of charges and payments - not clear what for. (Richard Terrell Meriwether
lived nearby our Lewises in KY, and followed into NW TN as neighbors as well)

In 1877 moved his family to New Orleans, LA. then to FL, but soon returned to Lake County TN.
In 1871, He was coroner of Lake County, and at one time a candidate for Sheriff of Lake Count.
He lost his life when on turning down his lantern, it exploded, and caused him to burn to death.

Dad only finished the 8th grade; educated himself at home; was a farmer until fire destroyed farm
home (started by son Buford Milton Lewis as a child playing with matches).
Moved to Memphis in Nov. of 1928. Worked for Kroger grocery store and later Forest Hill Dairy.
Had brown hair and blue eyes; was 5' 8" tall and weighed 145 Ibs.

Daddy died. She was 49. Became a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked at John Gaston for
many years. She later went to work for the Kennedy VA hospital in Memphis, and retired on
disability from there in about 1962.
